Centennial Nha Nácia Gomi
In 2025, Cape Verde marked a profound moment of cultural remembrance, the centenary of the birth of Maria Inácia Gomes Correia, affectionately known as Nha Nácia Gomi, revered as the “Queen of Finaçon” for her mastery of traditional Cape Verdean oral music and cultural expression. Born on July 18, 1925, in São Miguel (now Tarrafal), Santiago, Nha Nácia Gomi became an icon of cultural resistance. Despite being illiterate, she was a storyteller, finason singer, and custodian of popular wisdom, her improvisations challenged colonial realities and carried the voice of her people.
To honour her centenary in 2025, a commemorative logo was created, a visual identity that captures her spirit, cultural significance, and artistic legacy.
